BUT WHAT DO THEY STUDY IN WAR SCHOOLS? THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, IS POLITICAL
The recent news spread by Bloomberg headlined “Starmer says Ukraine can use UK missiles to strike inside Russia” beyond the facile comments that were predictable, offers an opportunity to make a simple reflection that starts with a simple question, “But what do they study in war schools?”
On closer inspection, the problem is not of the military apparatus, but cultural and political.
What they have not understood in London and Washington -which has dramatically emerged from all that has characterized the recent French election campaign that offered us a very sad panorama of electoral programs that to call disconnected from reality is putting it mildly- and which ends up giving evidence of the profound weakness of the whole West is that Russia in the face of statements and actions of this kind, will threaten retaliation that I doubt very much it will put in place (assuming it formulates those threats that would only serve to feed the U.S. narrative, which Moscow doesn’t care about at all) because sometimes the perfect course of action is not to act, playing catch-up.
What the West struggles to put in place is to avoid turning every economic dispute (because in the end that is what it is about) into something to be addressed by preparing a military strategy that absorbs energy and money to go nowhere: that is, doing exactly the opposite of what China is doing.
The proof? Saudi Arabia’s threat of retaliation should the EU decide to sell Russian assets to finance the war in Ukraine: an accomplishment achieved by Moscow -and especially Beijing- using diplomacy and economics wisely and sparingly while avoiding continually flexing its muscles, moreover ridiculously as done, just so as not to lose memory, by NATO when European warships crossed in the Pacific: an unnecessary deployment of forces unusable in the event of war for obvious logistical and paucity of means reasons.
Specifically, incidentally said, in the end, since the mention made concerns what the US and its allies put in place as a deterrent measure in defense of Taiwan, by dint of these real shenanigans in Taiwan they will be convinced that, given Western weakness, it will be better to resolve the dispute with Beijing autonomously by agreeing to join the PRC peacefully, perhaps ticking off a special type status of an autonomist kind: so much without a blow.
