CHI VUOLE UN NUOVO ANTISEMITISMO?

0

WHO WANTS A NEW ANTI-SEMITISM?

Although critical of the current policy of the State of Israel I must unfortunately note with extreme regret that what is happening more or less everywhere in the world is decidedly unacceptable to me in that we are witnessing a rather dangerous resurgence of anti-Semitism: a resurgence wanted, pursued and promoted for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with the legitimate right to criticize the strategic choices of the current Israeli establishment, a criticism that no one is entitled to use as a pretext to revive and feed absurd and unworthy hatreds that from time to time have been used by the political establishments of the most diverse countries and in the most diverse eras to overshadow their own responsibilities and/or real faults.

Just think of what happened in Germany in the aftermath of the heavy military defeat suffered at the time of World War I for the sole purpose of shifting the responsibility for that conflict away from the Imperial and Prussian military caste, or in France where the Dreyfus affair was artfully mounted after the defeat suffered in 1870 and even earlier to what happened in 15th-century Spain at the time of the Unification of the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, after the expulsion of the Moors following a war that had left the coffers of the new state empty, which were replenished by plundering the Sephardic Jews there who had been dwelling there for centuries, Jews who were for sum expelled blaming them for alleged connivance with the Arab rulers.

Unfortunately, the “perfidious Jew” has come back as an all too useful scapegoat on many occasions to divert the attention of the masses elsewhere when there has been a need to do so, and all things considered, even in the United States of our day, I believe there are those who find the campaign to discredit the Jews useful in order to be able, then, in due course, to impute to the powerful Jewish lobby choices, including economic and not only political ones, harbingers of heavy socioeconomic and ethical consequences of which a part of the local “gentiles” do not intend to take responsibility preferring that the same be laid on others, or rather to say the “usual” others disappeared from the scene that are the “communists,” made unavailable gays, blacks and various minorities in deference to the usual political correctness, as well as too vague and very little expendable the no better so far defined mythical “Deep State” so dear to the plotters of all creeds and tendencies.

In fact speculating on terms, giving a dignity of speech and thought to those who call themselves anti-Zionists because they are critical of Netanyahu’s policies is in fact a way of artfully dusting off the Jew-hatred card that has apparently remained in the drawer ready for use at the first opportunity because this is a useful card for many uses.

Incidentally, I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually, with the fact that President Zelenskyy is Jewish and has repeatedly had words of praise for Netanyahu someone revives the trite thesis of the “world Jewish conspiracy” that was long talked about in the past when “The Protocols of the Zion Tables” were made public, the false historical fruit of the Czarist secret services in order to fuel, stimulate and above all appropriately “direct” popular resentment over the heavy condition of distress in which the Russians found themselves because of a backward and feudal political power such as that represented and exercised by the Russian nobility of the time.

In this sense, certain stances taken even by our academics -and not only them- towards the Israelis with the denunciation of collaborative relations in the perhaps even technical and scientific sphere with scholars and researchers coming from the State of Israel, or with prestigious university institutions just because they are based in the Jewish State, seems to me simply not only absurd, but decidedly shameful, unworthy -when the promoters are students and especially university professors- as well as extremely worrying.

I shall therefore deliberately omit here to go into the merits of the continuation of the action carried out by the IDF except for one thing concerning the dutiful pointing out how it is exceedingly simplistic to attribute the responsibility for it to the Israeli government alone since it seems to me quite evident that the removal of the Palestinian community from Gaza is something that also finds active support among many Arab states and, I must say, even among Tehran: that Tehran has been very careful not to present its own recent attack on Israel as a consequence of the ongoing War in the Gaza Strip when it invoked its right to react to an attack carried out by Israel on one of its diplomatic institutions in Syria: something that I do not think has been adequately noted and emphasized for obvious reasons that have nothing to do with the current conflict in the Middle East.

In this sense I would like to -in deference to the principle that while it is true that “you don’t change things by changing their names” (so that if we called the apple pear and the pear apple, to those who asked me for a pear I would bring an apple), but having well in mind the creative power of the word- highlighting the non-expendability with undue levity and ignorance a whole series of terms that I have been seeing for a long time far too much used as if they were synonyms without realizing the harm that such behavior does to all of us, and frankly it pains me to note how no analyst, journalist or university lecturer bases has so far posed the problem.

The terms to which I want to draw attention are as follows, and I do so that they be used appropriately, for a good time.

ANTI-JUDAISM: It arises in regard to the Judaic religion and, more, from the denial of Christ as Messiah. It starts in ancient Rome, is perfected by Constantine and continues in the Christian church until recent times if not in some contemporary cases.

ANTISEMITISM: it is a later fruit of anti-Judaism that does not bind the individual to the specific religious profession, but to belonging to a reality of customs, habits, language, traditions that characterizes a people, in this case “belonging to the Jewish people,” and in the current interpretation overlaps with the previous one.

ANTISIONISM: it refers in a broad sense to a primarily cultural movement that arose in the late 1800s and had the main purpose of promoting the integration of Jewish communities dwelling in different countries by overcoming the ostracism suffered in previous centuries. It was only later from the basic core of the movement that the Zionist Revisionist Movement took shape, distinguishing itself from it, which set as its first goal to finally find a “Zion” for the Jewish people, and it was from it that the first migration of Jewish families to Palestine originated. In many cases the movement was also opposed by a substantial part of the Jewish community as much because of differing political beliefs as because of certain differences in interpretation of the common religious faith.

ANTI-ISRAELI: in all too many cases the term is used, in my opinion in a rather misleading way, as a synonym for anti-Zionism (of which Zionism it is not given to understand), in others with religious interpretation (see the case of Orthodox Jews), in other cases it is linked to what has been enacted by Israeli policy in recent decades with reference to the failure to comply with signed agreements, or the failure to comply with UN Resolutions, or even with reference to the occupation of the West Banks, the failure to respect the Palestinian minority and/or human rights.

Obviously the proposed ‘explanation’ may not appear somewhat simplistic, but I think it is necessary to interpret the particular situation in which everyone seems to want to confuse the terms.

For example, Germany until 1939 was anti-Semitic but not anti-Zionist, indeed there were contacts between the Zionist Revisionist Movement and the Nazi structure to encourage migration to Palestine…at that time it was enough for the Reich that Jews leave Germany or Reich territory…

Another example is provided to us by the well-known Moni Ovadia, class of 1964, born in Plovdiv in Bulgaria to a Sephardic Jewish family, but a lifelong resident of Milan, a theatrical author, writer, actor and singer who has always been engaged in a vast work of recovering and reworking the artistic heritage of the Jews of Eastern Europe, certainly cannot be considered an anti-Semite and even less an anti-Zionist, but he fiercely criticizes Israel..

While making no claim to exhaustiveness, I believe that these few notes are sufficient to understand both the picture that accompanies this brief writing and the risks that the misuse of these terms poses to all of us.
