THE DARK NIGHT OF THE WEST
A small post, the one by the exalted Dr. Paolo Falconio, which I felt I should comment on because of its importance, not without quoting it in full here, a post that deserves the utmost attention because of the topicality of the topic it addresses and which verbatim reads:
” It is not my intention to bore anyone, nor certainly to give you a summary of ‘Spengler’s work in one post. To all I apologize for generalizations and forcings , but the purpose is as noble as it is dangerous. It is dangerous because you do not want us to think in these terms. Granted that the ‘West is a category of the soul that today, like it or not, is identified with the United States, in our latitudes, it is a category to which we Europeans think we belong and perhaps geographically belong. But culturally we have misplaced that West west of the ‘Elbe which has its roots in Ancient Rome and which was not a city, but represented universality. The first question then is whether we are able to bring back our identity as peoples within universality. The second perhaps even more intimate question concerns what Spengler called “Kultur” (Ed. Latin-derived word)as opposed to “Zivilisation.” The former represented the inner strength of one’s identity, our deepest being, a powerful force capable of producing Culture and Action and contrasted with “Zivilisation ” which represented instead manners, technology and so on, but which is an empty shell if there is no Kultur . At the time, these distinctions served to forge national identities (particularly the German one), but this distinction, decontextualized is incredibly relevant today. We should turn it into a question and question ourselves seriously. Do we still have the inner strength to be and exist? And to do so even in ‘universality? Or are we empty shells? Are we just a beautiful German car, a gorgeous Italian dress and a great French perfume?
On how we answer these questions, each in our inner selves, will depend whether we can dream again of the ‘West, not as a soul category, but as a physical , cultural Entity to which we belong. A West that we have always been but are no longer and yet from which individually we are called every day to gather our inheritance. By default we will disappear from the history books.”
Clearly a great theme that in Europe we can still say is only felt by some thanks to Germany.
That Germany that signaled itself to the world on Christmas night of the year 800 thanks to Charlemagne, founder of that first Reich that history knows by the name of Holy Roman Empire and that, unfortunately, did not see the light of day under the best auspices because it was spoiled by that “Sacred” that blatantly marked the beginning of something that had little to do with the “Kultur” only posthetically evoked by that “Roman” not by chance preceded hierarchically by the appellation of “Sacred.”
A “Sacred” that had everything to do with the “Zivilisation” corrupted by those who had imposed the dogmatic primacy of a … ‘faith’ understood as the temporal primacy of the Bishop of Rome, and certainly not of the “Kultur” that had made Rome great.
Of that ‘Kultur’ that had been cassified by the founding fathers of Catholicism with the destruction of the Great Library of Alexandria and the killing of Hypatia.
Unfortunately, Catholicism (which was-and in some ways still is-quite different from Christianity) has been for the history of the West a temporal jinx in that it has everything to do with the temporal primacy of a priestly caste and very little to do with the word of that Christ in whose name the worst nefarious deeds have been carried out for centuries. Dark centuries in which every yearning for the reappropriation of “Kultur” was burned on Giordano Bruno’s pyre.
A partial change of course came with Luther, but by then the damage was done as still witnessed by the backwardness of Southern Europe compared to the North of the continent: a North that thanks to Luther at least saw a partial return to “Zivilisation” 500 years ahead of us.
The loss of values spoken of in the post shared here is still before our eyes because the progress hoped for in it in the end could only be technical, a technical progress without “Kultur” that has acquired leadership with the only power that “Zivilisation” knows how to build : that derived from money and hence the supremacy over all of the United States.
Unfortunately, that revification that you hope for cannot take place in a context like the present one that is amoral and based on “Zivilisation” alone.
The West whose revival you hope for died centuries ago, not now. And no different path can be taken as long as its arrangement is the present one.
If we add to this the fact that today the West stands out in the world for the frightening rate of functional illiteracy as well that pollutes it … well! let us say that we can talk about certain things again in no less than 1,000 years
