EUROPA- v.d.LEYEN 0-2: HEIL von der LEYEN!
Alla fine la Dr. Ursula von der Leyen ce l’ha fatta ad ottenere la riconferma per un altro quinquennio alla guida della Commissione Europea!
Il 18 luglio il Parlamento europeo ha rieletto per un secondo mandato alla presidenza della Commissione europea Ursula von der Leyen, esponente del Partito Popolare Europeo. Già presidente negli scorsi cinque anni, von der Leyen è stata rieletta con ben 401 voti favorevoli, 284 contrari e 22 tra schede bianche o nulle.
Ce l’ha fatta grazie ai buoni uffici dei molti, oserei dire fin troppi, a vario titolo, Chierici di San Nicola, di quei “St. Nicholas’ clerks” di Shakespeariana memoria che con il proprio voto hanno evidentemente voluto tutelare il loro santo protettore guadagnandosi il ben poco, in verità, onorevole titolo di “von der Leyen’s clercks”, con buona pace del famoso drammaturgo inglese che delle arcane vicende qui richiamate ebbe probabilmente notizia grazie al “Gioco di San Nicola” di Jean Bodel del 1190 di cui, tra gli altri, ci diede in qualche modo documentata notizia Niccolò Carmine Falcone riportando la leggenda alla base di questo mio gioco allusivo delle parti che si rifà all’Iconìa, uno degli spettacoli preferiti dai medioevali che mai e poi mai avrei immaginato sarebbe andato nuovamente in scena a Strasburgo.
L’infausto esito della votazione è stato documentato a vario titolo dagli organi di stampa che hanno doverosamente relazionato dei molti distinguo dei vari Parlamentari e gruppi parlamentari europei: tra i tanti resoconti proposti il più interessante ed accurato è stato sicuramente quello proposto da Pagella Politica che il 19 Luglio 2024 ha pubblicato un articolo intitolato “Alla fine Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra si è divisa sulla rielezione di von der Leyen”.
Per quanto qui a mio avviso di vero interesse, anche se personalmente ritengo inutile soffermarmi su certe elucubrazioni delle mosche cocchiere nostrane così come di quelle degli altri Paesi europei per la pochezza delle argomentazioni degli uni e degli altri, dediti come sono per lo più a dare aria alle corde vocali attingendo a piene mani pure al vento caldo che soffia senza ostacoli da svariati anni nei crani dei più, devo dire che vale la pena, prima di procedere oltre, soffermarmi su un paio di aspetti del ‘dibattito’, si fa per dire, e della congerie di pseudo riflessioni ‘strategiche’ che hanno fatto da cornice e sfondo alla votazione: tanto per meglio comprendere il perché, stando così le cose, non credo che l’attuale E.U. abbia un qualche futuro nel medio e financo (azzardo) breve periodo e, con essa, noi tutti.
Nel menzionato ampio resoconto di cui sopra ad un certo punto leggiamo:
“Il 20 giugno, in un punto stampa fuori dalla Camera, i leader di Europa Verde (Bonelli) e Sinistra Italiana (Frantoianni) hanno detto che avrebbero valutato un loro voto a von der Leyen, che nella scorsa legislatura non avevano sostenuto. La persona di «von der Leyen per noi non è mai stato un punto positivo, ma il punto non sono mai le persone, vedremo quali saranno gli sviluppi», aveva detto Fratoianni. Dal canto suo, Bonelli aveva detto che, sebbene il giudizio negativo su von der Leyen, Europa Verde era «assolutamente determinata a mettere ai margini quella destra camuffata rappresentata da Giorgia Meloni in Europa»”: in altri termini non è dato capire cosa motivi solitamente il voto di questi due signori, se le chiacchiere o le persone, anche se faccio fatica a capire come si possa votare una persona giudicata inaffidabile solo sulla base delle belle promesse da questa formulate.
Ora se il voto contrario di Sinistra Italiana è stato motivato con riferimento al fatto che la presidente della Commissione Europea non ha mai convinto del tutto (nota: e sinceramente quel “non del tutto” faccio fatica a valutare, alla luce dei fatti, quale parte abbia sortito approvazione) in particolare sulla questione delle armi e sulla trasparenza dei contratti siglati dalla Commissione Europea stessa con le aziende farmaceutiche per la fornitura di vaccini anti-Covid grazie anche ai buoni uffici del Dr. Von der Leyen, marito della Presidente della Commissione EU (una circostanza questa che 17 Luglio 2024 ha sicuramente pesato sulla condanna della Commissione EU da parte della Corte di Giustizia Europea), mi è oltremodo difficile comprendere il voto favorevole dei Verdi in generale e di quelli italiani in particolare allorché più oltre si può leggere quanto segue:
“Secondo Bonelli, la divisione tra Europa Verde e Sinistra Italia su von der Leyen non è comunque qualcosa di inaspettato, e non comporterà una rottura della loro alleanza. Questo è stato confermato a Pagella Politica anche da Sinistra Italia. «Il voto di ieri per noi non significa una divisione di Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra, perché noi siamo stati chiari subito dopo le elezioni, dicendo che saremmo entrati in gruppi europei diversi, di cui facciamo parte storicamente, seguendo di conseguenza le indicazioni di questi gruppi»”: una affermazione degna della peggiore logica che presiedette al fallimento della Repubblica di Weimar.
E poiché la storia che non si studia si ripresenta paro paro, per somma con gli interessi del caso, ecco che a fare bella mostra di sé troviamo un’affermazione che si commenta palesemente da sé: “Come Europa Verde abbiamo scelto di votare per von der Leyen per una scelta strategica e di pragmatismo politico, per costringere Fratelli d’Italia e i conservatori in questo modo abbiamo spinto i conservatori europei a non votare per von der Leyen, e ci siamo riusciti”, di fatto una affermazione che già di per sé stessa fa accapponare la pelle, non fosse che sul fronte opposto abbiamo che vari esponenti di Fratelli d’Italia avrebbero confermato il successo proprio di questa strategia affermando che (seguono le parole del Parlanentare europeo di Fratelli d’Italia Carlo Fidanza) “L’ufficializzazione del voto favorevole dei Verdi ha reso impossibile il nostro sostegno a von der Leyen”.
Inutile che io spieghi qui la gravità di tutto ciò in quanto chi non lo avesse ancora capito credo sia gravato di un problema cognitivo di non poca entità che posso solo, ahimè, compatire.
E se queste sono le logiche che adottano gli eletti, difficile immaginare quali logiche muovano gli elettori ed ancor più gli osservatori e gli analisti esteri che ancora danno credito ad una Giorgia Meloni reputandola una statista.
Se a questo aggiungiamo che il 17 Luglio 2024, quindi dopo la rielezione di Roberta Metsola (PPE) come Presidente, la risoluzione con la quale la EU ha confermato che continuerà a fornire armi all’Ucraina è stata approvata con ben 495 voti favorevoli, 137 contrari e 47 astenuti, con la sola eccezione di quasi tutti i parlamentari dei gruppi di destra “Patrioti per l’Europa” ed “Europa delle Nazioni Sovrane” unitamente a pochi altri appartenenti al gruppo dei Verdi Europei ed a quello della Sinistra Europea è facile intuire il grado di disagio in cui versa la società Europea che una tale classe politica ha delegato a rappresentarla.
Una società che con il proprio voto ha di fatto dato il via libera alla prevedibile riconferma al vertice della Commissione Europea il personaggio simbolo di questa impasse, ovverosia quella Ursula von der Leyen che, a fronte di tutto quanto sta accadendo nel mondo ed ai confini dell’Unione Europea (o, per meglio dire, di quel che ne resta) sa solo riproporre, come ha sottolineato nel suo discorso programmatico di insediamento del l’istituzione di un Ministero della Verità, ossia di una struttura che avrà come suo preciso scopo quello di censurare la diffusione di qualsivoglia notizia ‘non gradita’ bollandola come frutto di propaganda putiniana, attacco alla democrazia, ed altre spiritose invenzioni di questo tenore, incapace come è (e come lei la messe di politicanti che l’hanno votata ovvero non–votata, come visto, con calcolo e non per un sussulto di dignità) di affrontare i reali problemi sul tappeto, forse nella vana speranza che il sistema autocorregga sè stesso per poter tirare a campare ancora un po’ prima che la EU imploda rovinosamente.
Detto per inciso che a fare certe affermazioni relativamente alle fake news sia proprio la sig.ra von der Leyen che quanto a trasparenza, si veda la vicenda von der Leyen–Pfizer, ha dato ben altra prova di sé, direi che questa proposta appare più una iniziativa ad personam volta integralmente alla tutela degli interessi maggiormente legati alla sua persona ed alla sua carriera, per non parlare di quelli a vario titolo riconducibili alla cerchia di persone a lei, per così dire, più prossime, nonostante le reiterate dichiarazioni ufficiali continuino a fare riferimento alla difesa dei valori della democrazia occidentale in genere e della società civile europea di cui, a quanto pare, nessuno intende realmente occuparsi.
Come nota di colore vorrei rammentare che la riconfermata alla Presidenza del Parlamento Europeo, Roberta Metsola, è quella stessa che nel 2022, in risposta alle critiche piovute sull’Unione Europea a causa dello scandalo delle mazzette di Qatar e Marocco a Bruxelles, non aveva trovato nulla di meglio da fare che decidere di nominare come suo Capo di Gabinetto il cognato Matthew Tabone: un incarico che gli sarebbe valso uno stipendio tra i 15 ed i 20.000 EUR mensili per tutta la durata del mandato, oltre a ampie possibilità di carriera all’interno delle istituzioni Comunitarie. Una a dir poco imbarazzante vicenda che probabilmente avrebbe avuto ben altro risalto qualora fossero già state consolidate le misure adottate negli ultimi anni e tra queste il controverso Digital Service Act (DSA).
Quel DSA, approvato nell’agosto 2023 e caldamente promosso dal commissario Thierry Breton, che promette di richiede alle piattaforme online con oltre 45 milioni di utenti attivi al mese (Facebook, X e Instagram) di censurare rapidamente la cosiddetta “disinformazione” e di fornire aggiornamenti regolari, o “rapporti di trasparenza”, su tutto il lavoro posto in essere “per combattere la disinformazione”, come dichiarato sul nuovo sito web del “centro di trasparenza” dell’UE.
Una misura, quella prevista dal DSA, che mette la Commissione Europea nella condizione di minacciare le grandi aziende tecnologiche inadempienti di sanzioni pecuniarie che potrebbero ammontare al 6% del loro fatturato globale annuale, di essere indagate dalla Commissione e potenzialmente anche di essere bandite dalla EU.
Tutti rischi il cui evitamento è lecito supporre indurrebbe le società prese potenzialmente di mira ad uniformare il proprio comportamento alle direttive ed alle segnalazioni giunte dalle Istituzioni Europee.

EUROPA- v.d.LEYEN 0-2: HEIL von der LEYEN!
Dr. Ursula von der Leyen finally made it to her reappointment for another five-year term as head of the European Commission!
On July 18, the European Parliament re-elected Ursula von der Leyen, a member of the European People’s Party, to the presidency of the European Commission for a second term. Already president for the past five years, von der Leyen was re-elected with an impressive 401 votes in favor, 284 against and 22 blank or void ballots.
She succeeded thanks to the good offices of the many, dare I say far too many, in various capacities, St. Nicholas’ Clerics, of those “St. Nicholas’ Shakes. Nicholas’ clerks” of Shakespearean memory who with their vote evidently wished to protect their patron saint, earning themselves the very little, in truth, honorable title of “von der Leyen’s clercks,” much to the chagrin of the famous English playwright who of the arcane events recalled here probably got wind of them thanks to Jean Bodel’s “St. Nicholas’ Play” of 1190 of which, among others, gave us somewhat documented news of Niccolò Carmine Falcone reporting the legend behind this my allusive play of the parts that harkens back to the Iconìa, one of the favorite spectacles of the medievals that I never, ever imagined would be staged again in Strasbourg.
The inauspicious outcome of the vote was documented in various ways by the press organs that dutifully reported on the many distinctions of the various MEPs and parliamentary groups: among the many accounts offered, the most interesting and accurate was surely the one proposed by Pagella Politica, which on July 19, 2024 published an article entitled “In the end Green-Left Alliance split over von der Leyen’s re-election.”
As far as I see it here of real interest, although I personally find it unnecessary to dwell on certain lucubrations of our own as well as those of other European countries’ coach flies because of the paucity of the arguments of one and the other, devoted as they are mostly to giving air to the vocal chords by drawing heavily on the hot wind that has been blowing unhindered for several years in the skulls of most, I must say that it is worthwhile, before proceeding further, to dwell on a couple of aspects of the ‘debate’, so to speak, and of the congeries of pseudo ‘strategic’ reflections that have been the backdrop and background to the vote: just to better understand why, this being the case, I do not believe that the current E.U. has any future in the medium and even (I hazard) short term and, with it, all of us.
In the above-mentioned extensive account at one point we read:
“On June 20, at a press point outside the Chamber, the leaders of Europa Verde (Bonelli) and Sinistra Italiana (Frantoianni) said they would consider a vote for von der Leyen, whom they had not supported in the last legislature. The person of “von der Leyen for us has never been a positive point, but the point is never people, we will see what the developments will be,” Fratoianni had said. For his part, Bonelli had said that although the negative judgment on von der Leyen, Europa Verde was “absolutely determined to marginalize that disguised right wing represented by Giorgia Meloni in Europe.”””In other words, it is not given to understand what usually motivates the vote of these two gentlemen, whether the talk or the people, although I struggle to understand how one can vote for a person judged untrustworthy only on the basis of the fine promises formulated by this one.
Be that as it may, further on we read about how, “In the end, the two European groups to which Green Europe and the Italian Left belong decided (…) to vote in different ways. As anticipated, the European Greens voted in favor, while the European Left group voted against. Before the vote on von der Leyen, in fact, The Left’s spokeswoman in the European Parliament, France’s Manon Aubry, announced, “The Left’s vote will go against your re-election, Mrs. von der Leyen, against austerity policies and more pro-market policies. And we will support unity and solidarity.””
Now if Sinistra Italiana’s vote against was motivated by reference to the fact that the chairwoman of the European Commission has never been entirely convincing (note: and frankly that “not entirely” I have a hard time assessing, in the light of the facts, which part of it has resulted in approval) particularly on the issue of arms and on the transparency of the contracts signed by the European Commission itself with pharmaceutical companies for the supply of anti-Covid vaccines thanks also to the good offices of Dr. Von der Leyen, husband of the President of the EU Commission (a circumstance that 17 July 2024 surely weighed in the condemnation of the EU Commission by the European Court of Justice), I find it exceedingly difficult to understand the favorable vote of the Greens in general and of the Italian Greens in particular when further on one can read the following:
“According to Bonelli, the split between Green Europe and Sinistra Italia over von der Leyen is not something unexpected, however, and will not result in a rupture of their alliance. This was also confirmed to Pagella Politica by Sinistra Italia. “Yesterday’s vote for us does not mean a division of the Green-Left Alliance, because we were clear immediately after the elections, saying that we would join different European groups, of which we are historically a part, following the indications of these groups accordingly””: a statement worthy of the worst logic that presided over the failure of the Weimar Republic.
And since history that is not studied comes up again paro paro, by sum with the interests of the case, here to make a fine show of itself we find a statement that is self-evidently self-explanatory: “As Green Europe we chose to vote for von der Leyen out of a strategic choice and political pragmatism, to force Fratelli d’Italia and the conservatives in this way we pushed the European conservatives not to vote for von der Leyen, and we succeeded,” in fact a statement that in itself makes the skin crawl, were it not for the fact that on the opposite front we have that various members of Fratelli d’Italia would have confirmed the success of precisely this strategy by stating that (the words of Fratelli d’Italia’s European Parlanentary Carlo Fidanza follow) “The formalization of the Greens’ favorable vote has made it impossible for us to support von der Leyen.”
Needless for me to explain here the gravity of this as those who have not yet understood it I believe are burdened with a cognitive problem of no small magnitude that I can only, alas, pity.
And if these are the logics that the elected officials adopt, it is hard to imagine what logics move the voters and even more so the foreign observers and analysts who still give credence to a Giorgia Meloni by reputing her to be a stateswoman.
Add to this the fact that on July 17, 2024, then after Roberta Metsola’s (EPP) re-election as president, the resolution by which the EU confirmed that it will continue to supply arms to Ukraine was passed with as many as 495 votes in favor, 137 against and 47 abstentions, with the sole exception of almost all the parliamentarians from the right-wing groups “Patriots for Europe” and “Europe of Sovereign Nations” along with a few others from the European Greens and the European Left, it is easy to guess the degree of unease in which the European society that such a political class has delegated to represent it finds itself.
A society that with its vote has in fact given the go-ahead to the predictable reappointment at the top of the European Commission of the personage symbolic of this impasse, namely that Ursula von der Leyen who, in the face of everything that is happening in the world and at the borders of the European Union (or, rather, what remains of it) knows only how to repropose, as she pointed out in her inaugural programmatic speech of the establishment of a Ministry of Truth, i.e., of a structure that will have as its precise purpose to censor the dissemination of any ‘unwelcome’ news by branding it as the fruit of Putinian propaganda, an attack on democracy, and other such witty inventions, incapable as she is (and as she is of the mass of politicians who voted for her or not-voted for her, as seen, calculatingly and not out of a jolt of dignity) of addressing the real problems on the table, perhaps in the vain hope that the system will self-correct itself in order to get by a little longer before the EU implodes ruinously.
Incidentally, having said that to make certain statements regarding fake news is precisely Ms.Ms. von der Leyen, who as far as transparency is concerned, see the von der Leyen-Pfizer affair, has given far different proof of herself, I would say that this proposal appears to be more of an ad personam initiative aimed entirely at protecting the interests most closely linked to her person and her career, not to mention those in various ways related to the circle of people closest to her, so to speak, despite the fact that repeated official statements continue to refer to the defense of the values of Western democracy in general and European civil society, which, it seems, no one really intends to take care of.
As a note of color, I would like to recall that the reappointed President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, is the same one who in 2022, in response to the criticism rained down on the European Union because of the Qatar and Morocco bribe scandal in Brussels, had found nothing better to do than to decide to appoint her brother-in-law Matthew Tabone as her Chief of Staff: a position that would have earned him a salary of between EUR 15 and 20,000 per month for the duration of his term, as well as ample career opportunities within the Community institutions. This is an embarrassing affair, to say the least, and one that would probably have had a far different prominence if the measures adopted in recent years, including the controversial Digital Service Act (DSA), had already been consolidated.
That DSA, approved in August 2023 and warmly promoted by Commissioner Thierry Breton, which promises to require online platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users (Facebook, X and Instagram) to quickly censor so-called “disinformation” and provide regular updates, or “transparency reports,” on all the work put in place “to combat disinformation,” as stated on the new website of the EU’s “transparency center.”
A measure, the one envisaged by the DSA, that puts the European Commission in a position to threaten large, non-compliant tech companies with fines that could amount to 6 percent of their annual global turnover, with being investigated by the Commission, and potentially even with being banned from the EU.
These are all risks whose avoidance it is safe to assume would induce the potentially targeted companies to bring their behavior in line with the directives and warnings that have come from EU institutions.
